Nairy Baghramian (b. 1971, Iran) is one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary artists in the past decade whose sculptures and installations are inspired by architecture and the human form. Baghramian explores how time, space, and social contexts connect with language, history, and contemporary life. This exploration invites viewers to interact with their surroundings, challenging and redefining traditional relationships between objects and their meanings.

First shown at Münster, Germany in 2017 as part of the 5th edition of Skulptur Projekte Münster, Privileged Points is part of Baghramian’s ongoing series of sculptures that can be arranged in various forms and locales. Installed against the dramatic backdrop of the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), it consists of muted tones, rather than imposing colour, sympathetically and symbiotically working with their environment. Privileged Points consists of tubular sculptures, cast, and covered in pastel lacquer, appearing delicately balanced as if resting on large drips of paint.

Baghramian's work addresses traditional sculptural questions of mass and weightlessness, form and colour, stability and performance. In Privileged Points, the sculptures delicate interplay, with their open forms, blend old and new influences, techniques, and materials. In doing so, Baghramian invites the viewer to interact with the piece and understand the connections and shared creativity across multiple histories and cultures.
