Untitled (Trench, Shafts, Pit, Tunnel and Chamber) comes from a series of works made by Bruce Nauman (b.1941) in the late seventies, a period during which he experimented with his practice; specifically with sculpture, its spatial functionalities and relationships with various landscapes.

Bruce Nauman previously referred to this sculpture as a model of much larger earthworks within the landscape of the exhibition where this work was originally shown. This work or "model" is created at 1:40 scale; if fully realized, it would far exceed the scale of the buildings that now surround it.
